Happy 2019! The holidays are pretty much over and it’s back to the daily grind. At some point in your life, most of you have made a New Year’s resolution or two. In my case, I’ve kept every New Year’s resolution I ever made…for a month or two. While we are always in the pursuit or perfection, it often eludes us. According to Wikipedia, the most common reasons that people can’t keep their New Years’ Resolutions include: set unrealistic goals (35%), didn’t keep track of progress (33%), forgot about it (23%) and made too many resolutions (9%). To quote the famous last line of the 1959 movie Some Like It Hot: “Well, nobody’s perfect.”
In the spirit of making a fresh start in 2019, here’s a list of my top New Year’s resolutions that can hopefully get (or keep) you and your network security posture in shape:
Get in Shape
Nothing scares me into getting into shape like an upcoming physical. I’ll get a few good check marks for maintaining good blood pressure and other normal levels, but let’s just say if all of my results were going to be audited, I’d have a little work to do. The same goes for many of you who have to keep up with audits to maintain compliance with internal and regulatory mandates like the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) or the Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST). You’ll get some good check marks here and there, but with compliance standards always changing, keeping up can be a time and labor-intensive nightmare. With FireMon, you can achieve continuous compliance tailored to regulatory standards and customized to your own. Through features including real-time monitoring and traffic flow analysis, FireMon can immediately provide you clear steps for remediation when compliance drifts, as well as automatic documentation and validation of compliance that will significantly reduce your time spent preparing for an audit. We tend to eat and drink a little more during the holidays, and unfortunately, the scale doesn’t shield us from the awful truth. A few added pounds probably won’t hurt you in the short term, but long term, your body will become more sluggish and you might be susceptible to many health issues. The same applies to your firewalls. If you don’t take care of them and forget to check your access rules, adjust your policies regularly or remove any old rules, you could face increased risk, misconfiguration errors and poor device performance. FireMon can help optimize your firewalls and other network equipment by identifying and removing hidden, redundant and shadowed rules, as well as removing unused access and overly permissive rules. With your firewalls in tip-top shape, you’ll see increased performance, enhanced security and better overall management across your entire environment. Learn a New Language
I consider myself lucky being able to speak more than one language, but I wish I could speak them all. When I visited Italy a few years back, I was able to use Spanish to get around, but it didn’t help at all when I visited China. Everyone’s network environment is different, but it doesn’t mean they can’t speak the same language. FireMon’s RESTful open-standard architecture offers our customers the ability to integrate all the critical information necessary to perform conclusive analysis of firewall devices, policies and underlying risks. FireMon’s API delivers integration leveraging nearly any web-based language to support an enterprise’s unique environment including, but not limited to, ticketing and management platforms, SIEM, vulnerability management tools, and much more. In Forrester’s report, The Zero Trust eXtended Ecosystem: “Any vendor or technology worth their salt will have advanced API integration available for your team to use for development purposes as well as to integrate other security solutions into your Zero Trust ecosystem.” You can learn more about the Zero Trust eXtended Ecosystem and read the full report here.
Before I leave this crazy world, one item on my bucket list is to visit all seven continents…and I have two more to go (Africa and Antarctica). Planning for a big trip can be time consuming, not to mention expensive and disruptive to your normal day-to-day routine. There can also be unforeseen issues like cancelled flights, lost luggage and hotel mix-ups. You need a solid plan, whether you’re traveling to a new country or migrating your data center to the cloud. FireMon can help you overcome your migration challenges by automating the translation of your current configurations, cleaning old rule bases and transitioning to your latest network security solutions. Moving to the cloud can intimidating, especially if you don’t have the visibility you need to manage and secure your environment. FireMon gives you the confidence to make the move with real-time visibility and control of your public, private, and hybrid clouds. You can move at the speed of DevOps with guardrails to automate your security policy workflow while managing change to ensure security and prevent downtime. Learn what you need for a successful migration to the cloud here.
Also, if you have a few minutes to spare, I invite you to take part in our 2019 State of Hybrid Cloud Security survey. The first 200 respondents will receive a $10 Starbucks gift card.
Here’s wishing you a healthy and secure 2019!
