The firewall weather forecast
Greetings weather-watchers and firewall-lovers of the Internet World. Today’s forecast in network security calls for sunny firewall skies, with 94% of respondents in our 2018 State of the Firewall report indicating that firewalls were as critical as they’ve ever been to daily security operations.
But the forecast isn’t completely sunny. Firewall management continues to represent a major challenge for many organizations. Our respondents identified key pain points that include rule complexity, policy compliance, audit readiness, and manual change management processes.
Speaking of cloudy … well, 53% of organizations reported that they’ve gone either fully or partially towards public or hybrid cloud. Clouds are pervasive. (It’s a major driver of business growth for multiple companies right now, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle.)
There’s some diversity to this forecast too … many respondents are considering implementation of technologies including virtualization, software-defined networks, and microsegmentation.
And finally, the future forecast is bound to change (isn’t it always?), because 64% of respondents are still utilizing manual change management processes despite a high volume of change requests.
It’s a complicated, cloudy picture out there -- but rays of sun are peeking through in the 94% statistic.
